Reflection about my web page

I have finished my web page and I wanted to write a reflection about what it took to make a web page. I started this web page with no clue on how to design one or even how to come up with an idea for it to be about. So from my other class EDUC 688 I came up with the idea to inform people about how useful video games could be in the classroom. I had done some research on the subject in class and most of what I found was in the positive point of view. So I just went with it. I decided to use one of my favorite sites IGN.com because it has all you want to know about new and old video games. They have reviews, trailers, discussions, and video reviews about many of the games on theirs site. So using the reviews I came up with 20 video games that would be useful in the class as one of the pages in my website. All the video games posted on my site have a review or summary linked to it so you can just click on the web name of the game you want to look at and read or see what that game is all about. Not all the game I put on the list is great to use but I thought that they were so I put the information out there to be read by my visitors. Another page was articles and I had found tons of articles form my other class but I decided not to use them but find news to post on my page. Although the ones I found for the other class were good, but I just wanted to find what other information I could find on the subject and see what new info what out there. One more page was the book page. I list three books that I found on the internet I have not read them all yet but the three I posted I am looking for now. The last page I make was a link page that linked other web sites to my page. They are all different I have a game page for young student, I linked IGN.com so that you could see what the page was all about for yourself, EVONY is another game I posted that I have been playing now for about 4 week and it is great every time I hook my internet up to the computer I load it first, and I loaded a link to another web page that had its own list of top 20 educational video games. I feel link for now my web page is very good and ready for everyone to see. My plan is to keep updating it as I find new information on new education video games. I will post another writting soon with a link to my Web Page.

Bookless classrooms

I found an article on OLDaily’s blog that has to do with the way student learn today. I think many people today would say that student learn more form surfing the internet then reading form a text-book. That is what this article is trying to say, that student seem less motivated with it come to leaning with text-book. A school board member in the Toronto District School Board was interviewed and said that he could see that more teacher teach with old methods the more student seem less interested in the content. Like him I feel the same way that if some how teachers could implement more technology in the lesson students would be more interested in the subject covered. The article talks about a school in Toronto has used the a networking site for student to be a part of and there students can tune in homework and other things that they have found while researching subjects. The article says that students seem to like that doing school work over the internet. So I think that this may be a new trend set in education. No more Books

I was looking through the archives on OLDaily’s blog and ran across this article “Welcome to the library. Say goodbye to the books”. Reading that a school would get rid of all the book is crazy. I could never see how a school could go without any book on had in a library. I know that people can get book on the internet but to have the information right there and not have to go searching and not knowing what you may find is a little more than I would want. A book in front of me is better than a website that I don’t know who has put it together. I know a am on my soap box here is what the article is about. A prep school near Boston is getting rid of all their book in the library and replacing them with computers, a coffee shop, electronic reader, and laptop friendly stations. All these thing sound really nice but I am a person that would rather have the book in front of me than staring into a computer screen. I could just be me but my eye start to hurt after looking a computer screen to long. Take a look at the article and tell me what you think.

No Classes just Learning

I was on OLDaily today and ran across a post I found very interesting. It was about a school in Canada that has not class, but student deciding what subject they want to learn about and when they learn that subject. The school is Bishop Carroll High School. The student take whatever class they want,anytime they want. It is called self-directed learning. If you want to take Math all day you can and then another subject all day a different day. If you are in social studies and you want to take science you can get up and go to social studies. I think this is a great way to let students learn. A student is no in the mood to learn science that day then they don’t have to. Now the student still have to meet the requirement for high school but there is not a set way of doing it. I think that this would make student want to learn knowing that they don’t have to learn something in a set way. I found this quote very interesting it is by a 12 grade student at Bishop “I love it. Quite often with me, I get on a roll with a certain subject. It’s really nice to work on English for a week and get all of Shakespeare done. It feels way more individualized this way,” said Skarzynski, who shapes her schoolwork around daily choir practice.” Take a look at the article and see for yourself if this is a good way of learning

Computer and the Classroom

I was doing some research for another class about how technology affects behavior and I ran across an article that got me a little upset. It is called “When Computers Leave Classroom, So Does Boredom” This article was written by Jose Bowen who works at Meadows School of the Arts and he has decided to teach with out technology, and he is wanting all teachers to stop using technology in the classroom. That is what made me upset. I think that technology is a great thing to use in the classroom. It can motivate students to learn, it inhances the lesson, and it can make note taking a little easier. We all know about the Teacher you had back in high school that had terriable hand writing. If that teach technology to go with his lesson you may have gotten a better grade in that class. All I am saying is that technology is needed in the classroom today. I know that some teacher depend on it too much but if used in the right way it could take a good lesson to a great lesson and reach so many more of your students. So take a look at the article if you would like and make up your own mind.

Learning Experiences:

This blog post is about books written to show the impact of video games and technology has on learning experiences. Although the majority of the post is mostly about a book written by Clark Quinn. He talks about other authors that have been written about the same subject on video games and technology. When I first read the title of the post I thought that I was going to read about a way to design a good learning experience for students. What I did learn is another thing that I could use for my finial project. A list of books that could help gives teachers and students information on ways to use technology in the classroom. I have read Gee’s book and the ideas to use video games in my classroom. So this post was not about what I thought it was about but the post did give me some information on books that could give new light on what could make learning experiences better for the 21^st century student.

Final Project

What are you going to do?

For my final project I think I want to do a power point over video games and student motivation.

How are you going to do it?

I am going to make a power point that can be used to show teachers that video game use in the classroom can help motivate students to learn.

Who is it intended for?

My project is intended for teachers and administrators.

Why are you going to do it?

I am doing this project to give teacher the understanding that the use of video game can be a helpful teaching tool in the classroom. The power point will have research and interviews of both teachers and students on their thoughts about video games.

How will you know it works?

I will know if it works by if I ever give the presentation and teachers use it in their classroom and the feed back that teachers give me.
